Teens who spend a lot of time to listening music, more at risk of depression than teens who like reading. Thus said researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, USA. Researchers enrolled 106 participants to look for media relation with emotional health. For two months, the researchers asked participants many times to report the type of media they receive, including television, music, video games, internet, magazines, and books. Experts found the teens who spend most of their time listening to music, 8.3 times more likely to become depressed. On the other hand, those who would rather read a book about 1/10 of the music fans who are at risk of depression.
“At this point, it remains unclear whether listening to music as an escape (of depression), or whether listening to music in large quantities can cause depression, or both. Whatever it is, these findings may help doctors and parents aware of the relationship between media and depression, “said Dr Briaqn Primack, assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at Pitt’s School of Medicine.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depressive disorder estimated to affect one in 12 adolescents. The study is published inthe April issue of the journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
