Apparently, more men suffer from liver cancer compared with women. This disease is most happen in Asia and comparison of 3: 1 to 5: 1 for male patients. “For countries in Asia Pacific, 70% cause of liver cancer is hepatitis B. As for the countries of Europe, America and Japan, mostly because of hepatitis C,” said Prof. Ali Sulaiman in Jakarta. Until now the exact cause of why more men suffer from liver cancer is still unclear. Some things are suspected as the cause is hormonal differences, men are more often outside the home, and because women have a stronger immune system.
“It is known that hepatitis B and C disease is most prevalent happen in men than women,” said Sulaiman. The journey to become liver cancer, can be quite long. Initially, hepatitis B virus enters the body and cause damage and stimulate the cells to be active. As a result, there will be nodules (bumps) on the liver. If it continues, it will lead to cirrhosis and cause liver cancer.
“If in family history there are someone who have hepatitis or cancer, it is necessary to be alert. Because, gene factor can accelerate the emergence of abnormal nodules which can become cancerous,” said Sulaiman. Besides a result of hepatitis B and C, several other conditions can also be a factor causing liver cancer, such as, obesity, fatty liver, diabetes, Alfatoksin (toxin in peanuts), smoking, alcohol and long-term use of anabolic steroids. “To determine liver cancer treatment options, be aware of some things, such as, stage, tumor size, liver function and overall health status,” he said. If the patient’s overall condition is good., then treatment can be done to cure for early stage cancer and is palliative for advanced-stage cancer.
