Seizures often occur in children who suffer from high fever. Such seizures can be a symptom of more serious disease, but it can also not harmful. Another disease characterized by seizures is epilepsy and muscle spasms (cramps) will also be discussed in this chapter.
1. Epileptic seizures
Aid measures :
2. Muscle spasms (cramps)
Cramping may occur because of exhaustion (usually happens at night, while sleeping), can also be due to the cold (while swimming), can also be due to heat (occurs in athletes who competed in the heat). Muscle spasms due to heat can be prevented by avoiding drinking fresh water when going to or were playing in the heat. Give a little salt in the drink, to avoid cramps.
Aid measures :
- Cramps due to fatigue can be overcome by stretching the muscle. When seizures occur in the calf, then stand with your toes (tiptoe) and tapping your heels down. If cramps occur in the abdominal wall muscles, stretch your body contort way back.
- Cramps that occur during swimming can be overcome by pulling your knees to your chest while the body trying to float (if still in the water), and massage the cramping muscle. When the seizure was painful, give a sign that you need help.
- Heat cramps, lay the patient to a cool and shady places, and provide salt water (one teaspoon of salt to half a liter or two glasses of water). Massage cramped muscles with liniment. The patient must rest for 1 or 2 days.
3. Febrile Seizures
Seizures due to high fever usually occurs in children aged 1-5 years. Seizures of this type usually only lasted a few minutes. If there are children who suffer from seizures due to fever, which need to be considered is the possibility of a stiff neck.
How to check :
Raise your child’s head. If there is stiff in the neck, the body will come up. Stiff neck indicate a disease in the lining of brain, therefore must be immediately taken to the hospital.
Aid measures :
Protect his/her tongue from the dangers of being bitten by putting wood or spoon wrapped in a handkerchief in mouth. Compress the head with an ice pack, but covered his/her hands and feet. If any, hot water bottle placed between both legs. This will help to stop the seizure. Or can be by massaging the feet and hands to help blood flow to that area. DO NOT give any beverage.
