Immediately after childbirth, the female body temperature is usually increased. The temperature at 101F (38.2C) or higher during the first 12 hours after birth may indicate an infection, but usually not. However, in some cases, women should be checked by a doctor or midwife.
Infection after childbirth (postpartum) is usually diagnosed 24 hours after childbirth and women were temperature 100.4 F (38C) or higher on two occasions at least six hours apart. Postpartum infections are usually rare because doctors try to prevent or treat keaadan which can cause infection. Nevertheless, the possibility of infection can be serious. Thus, if a woman’s body temperature more than 100.4 F at any time during the first week after childbirth, she immediately contact a doctor.
Infection after childbirth may be linked directly with the birth process (occurring in the uterus or the area around the uterus) or not directly related (occurring in the kidneys, bladder, breast, or lung).
Postpartum infection usually begins in the womb. If infection of the membranes containing the fetus (amniotic sac) causes fever during labor, infection of the uterine lining (endomentritis), uterine muscle (myometritis), or the area around the uterus (parametritis) can occur.
Factors that cause infections after childbirth
Bacteria that normally live in a healthy vagina can cause infection after giving birth.Things that make a woman more likely to experience infections, among others:
- anemia
- pre-eclampsia
- repeated vaginal examinations
- delays longer than 18 hours between rupture of the membranes and childbirth
- long labor
- caesarean section
- pieces of placenta that remains in the uterus after childbirth
- excessive bleeding after childbirth
The symptoms of infection after childbirth
Symptoms of postpartum infection usually include:
- pale,
- chills,
- headache,
- feeling sick or uncomfortable usual,
- and loss of appetite.
In addition, symptoms may include rapid heartbeat, high white blood cell count is not normal, and the uterus was swollen, soft and gentle. Usually, there is spending that amount of malodorous vaginal discharge varies. When the tissues around the uterus was swollen, but the uterus remains soft. Women are experiencing severe pain and high fever.
Stomach lining may become inflamed and cause peritonitis. Blood clots can form in the pelvic veins, causing pelvic thrombophlebitis. Blood clots can walk into the lungs and clogged arteries, causing pulmonary embolism.
Toxic substances produced by bacteria that infect can reach high levels in the bloodstream, causing toxic shock. In toxic shock, blood pressure falls dramatically and very fast heartbeat. Toxic shock occurs in severe kidney damage and even death.
Diagnosis and treatment of infection after childbirth
Infection is usually diagnosed based on physical examination. Samples of urine, blood, and completion of the vagina is embedded to the bacteria. If the uterus is infected, women are usually given intravenous antibiotics to have a fever for 48 hours. A few days after that antibiotics can be given malalui mouth.
