Cobra venom is one of the strongest toxin, and able to kill humans, cobra bite and inject poison (neurotoxin) through its fangs. Then the toxin paralyzes nerves and muscles of the victim within only a few minutes. In addition, the cobra can spray venom into the eye. But, not all the cobra can do it. Cobra will attack only if attacked first or feel threatened. Besides, sometimes they also just bite without injecting venom (‘empty’ bites or ‘dry’ bites). So not all cobra bites in humans lead to death, even enough percentage of bites that do not cause symptoms of poisoning in humans. however, we must remain cautious when hit by a cobra.Symptoms of poisoning :
It is important to note once again, that cobra bites in humans did not always end with death. Cobra will bite because it only wanted to warn and expelled. When the cobra bites, poison that comes out only slightly. If patients are handled properly, generally not lead to death until several hours later. So, death does not come instantly or within a few minutes. No need to panic.
cobra venom (like most Elapidae) are neurotoxins, which affect and paralyzes nerve tissue. Slowly, victims would feel sleepy (heavy eyelids), difficulty breathing, until the pulse and heart rhythm disrupted in a few hours later. But not similar with another snakes Elapidae, Java and Sumatra cobra venom can damage the tissue around the bite wound. So also is hemotoksin.
Bruising and bleeding under the skin may occur, and the pain will appear (but not always) in the first few minutes after being bitten. Around the wound will swell, and together with the spread of swelling, pain also spread mainly around the joints. Bruising will gradually darken and become necrotic then blood clotting ability was also decreased. Without the above symptoms, there is no possibility of toxins into the body, or too little to poison the human body.
But need to remember, poisonous snake or not, almost certainly will raise fear or anxiety in humans. Has been so embedded in human minds, incorrect assumption, that every snake is poisonous and every snake bite could cause death. In excessive conditions, this fear can lead to shock on the victim with similar symptoms. The patient will feel weak, cold sweats, weakened heart rate, quickened breathing and consciousness decreases. Observe the development of symptoms in patients to determine appropriate remedial action.
First Aid For Cobra Venom Bite :
Treat the wound carefully without making new wounds in the vicinity (Eg to try to remove toxins). Use tourniquet to inhibit the rate of poison in the blood. Do not move too much, especially the part that has been bitten, so that blood circulation is not accelerating. Remove the poison by sucking, and DO NOT swallow it, but spit it out.
