Children with autism have larger brains size and up to 10% compared to normal children. This condition can be seen two years old.
As revealed in Archives of General Psychiatry report, researchers from the University of North Carolina found that children with autism have enlargement of the brain at the age of two years. Their brains are growing at the age of 4 and 5 years.
“Enlargement of the brain occurs because of the increased number of folds of the brain surface. This occurs because the increased proliferation of brain neurons,“ says Heather Cody Hazlett, assistant professor of psychiatry.
Furthermore, researchers continue to develop study to find out what kind of gene that makes the brain neurons experiencing excessive proliferation. University of North Carolina is currently conducting two separate studies to obtain answers.
Signs of autism can be monitored by continuing to observe the development of a child’s brain size. “This effort is important to monitor brain size and behavior change as their age,“ said Hazlett.
