Pregnant women should be careful in choosing a toothpaste, because research has shown that the chemicals contained in the toothpaste can damage the fetal brain. Scientists have found that pregnant women who exposed to high levels of chemicals, including triclosan, can make a baby in the womb became disabled (defect or disability). New research shows that triclosan in toothpaste can interfere blood flow to the uterus, thus making the uterus hungry. Whereas oxygen is necessary for fetal brain development.
“We know these chemicals can lead to trouble, especially for pregnant women. But we do not know how many chemicals that can cause problems, ” said Professor Margaret James from University of Florida. Triclosan is a powerful antibacterial that has been developed nearly 50 years ago. Now triclosan commonly used in toothpaste, deodorant and hand-washing soap, antibacterial soap, and even in some kinds of toys.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of American has announced to review the security level of the use of triclosan. The new study indicates triclosan may disrupt the enzyme that allows circulating estrogen to the uterus. Estrogen helps open the main artery to carrying blood that rich of oxygen to the fetus. If too few, it will be narrowed arteries and oxygen supply will be exhausted. Previous research has shown that antibacterial soaps which containing triclosan and triclocarban, suspected to damage the reproductive organs, reduced sperm quality and the production of thyroid and sex hormones.
Another study also found that levels of triclosan in toothpaste which supposed to prevent bacterial growth, can cause the germs more resistant to antibiotics. In addition, both compounds are also water-repellent or hydrophobic, tend to stick to the particle, damaging long-term transport in water and air. Even the accumulation of triclosan in water will contaminate the beaches, and threaten the lives of sea creatures.
