Most Asean people typically blushing when drinking alcohol, exactly same when they’re shy. These symptoms indicate risk of esophageal cancer, so it is recommended to limit alcohol consumption. Blushing is caused by dilation of blood vessels, related with accumulation of toxic compounds, the acetaldehyde. This compound is result of alcohol metabolism, before it is processed again into a safer compound (acetate) to removed from the body. These symptoms experienced by most of the Asian population, especially Japan, China and Korea. Genetically, these ethnic groups have ALHD2 enzyme deficiency, which functions to metabolize acetaldehyde into acetate.
Because it is difficult metabolized into acetate, acetaldehyde will accumulate in the blood that causes blushing. More worse, acetaldehyde is also one of the carcinogens or hazardous substances that cause cancer. “People who lack ALHD2 enzyme have high risk for esophageal cancer,” said Phillip J Brooks, researcher from National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
