Some people consider trivial and harmless. Do you realize, acne affects someone’s psyche. Teens with acne often feel inferior and depressed. Although not yet proved really cause emotional problems, an analysis of 16 studies show it. Acne in teenagers have a greater impact than just improving acne drug sales.
“Acne has a huge impact on people’s lives,” says a writer, Steven R. Feldman, professor of dermatology Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
He continued, “This is something that is feasible to treat, and not just because it can cause permanent scars. ” For example patients with psoriasis, may have problems with heart disease, arthritis, and mental.
Acne, of course, has long been known as the scourge of teenagers, although it does occasionally affect adults. Feldman and colleagues examine the possible effects of acne on quality of life and mental health in adolescents. The study published in Dermatology Online Journal. Overall, the study says acne affects quality of life, self esteem, and mood of adolescents. Acne is also associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.
But to conclude that acne and depression has a causal relationship, it seems not possible. The studies do not prove a direct cause of acne psychiatric problems, and if think otherwise is not possible.
“To conclude is complicated, and we also anticipate that the depression does not cause acne,” said Feldman.
The good news is most of the acne can be treated, especially in severe cases. A drug called Accutane (isotretinoin) still sold, despite its reputation cause serious side effects, including depression, if not properly supervised. Because it has a relationship with birth defects, the drug is also very dangerous for pregnant women. Those with less severe acne, or those who do not want to use drug, will face a major dilemma. In such cases, they are not cure acne, but maintaining it. There are many acne treatments other than pills, including injections which reduce inflammation and creams that are sold freely.
What should you do? Feldman suggested that acne sufferers to go to the doctor to get care, primary care physician or dermatologist before scarring or psychological effects appear.
