Watching 3D films is more advisable watch at cinema, not at home. Technology used in 3D television products at this time, can lead to eye fatigue, dizziness, nausea and headaches. One of the reason is the distance between audience and television that are too close, because television is usually placed in a smaller space than the cinema. More closer to screen, increasingly felt the impact, especially for eyes and head.
Research conducted by experts from Eindhoven University in Netherlands revealed, 20% of users of 3D television, experiencing unpleasant symptoms while watching. In this study, the distance between the audience with a television screen is an average of 10 feet or about 3 meters. 7 of 39 correspondents who investigated claims often nausea and headache after watching a 3D television. This disorder does not appear immediately, usually preceded by symptoms of double vision and strain on the eye.
Besides that distance is too close, the technologies used in 3D television is also influential. There are two types of 3D television that circulating, active and passive television. each having a different technology and not all match with ability of our eye.
Active television sold at cheaper price, but burden on the eye. Special glasses which used in this television, requires the battery to close the left and right eye alternately. It’s very fast and give you 3D effect. Because the polarization occurs in the glasses, the distance of image processing become very close to the eye. As a result, the burden of the eye becomes more severe and rapid tension that trigger nausea and headaches.
Passive television using the same technology with modern cinemas. In this type, the polarization occurs on the screen, glasses which used much simpler and does not burden the eye.
The Royal College of Opthalmologist in England admit existence of short-term impact of the use of 3D television on the eye. but for long-term impact, this institutions recommends further research. “I think watching 3D TV will not cause eye damage. But if too long, light headache is the impact of eye strain,” said Jogh Lee, The president of The Royal College of Opthalmologist.
Lee also recommends 3D glasses should not be used on children under 8 years, because at that age the eye muscles are still developing. He worried 3D glasses can prevent the development of the eye muscles.
